Parting Tool for Lathe
Make a homemade parting tool using inexpensive parts, and having replaceable blades
This parting tool for a metal turning lathe is made from a 2 or 3 inch length of 1/2 inch square tube steel. Two or three bolts are used to secure a saber-saw blade inside the tube for use as the parting cutter. It may be necessary to file the 1/4 inch nuts down a bit in order to make them fit inside the square tube. If you leave them a bit proud you can force them in place and friction will keep them positioned while you are changing cutter blades.
Even cheap saber saw blades have highly tempered steel on the cutting edge, thus they make excellent disposable cutters.
This project is designed to fit the relatively inexpensive 7X10 metal turning lathes sold by Harbor Freight, and others.
