Inspiration

Writing apologetics briefing tools has been the most significant accomplishment of my ministry career. Of course, the Lord is my inspiration, but you might be surprised how this first came about. It seems that He had this enterprise in mind before I even got started in the quest to follow Him.

My life before Christ, around 1967-1974 "B.C.", involved reading a lot about automobiles. So much so that it wouldn't be too far off to say that I used to worship cars before I first really worshiped Jesus. In this context, I created a crude form of annotated automotive bibliography, photocopied it and mailed it off to my friends as a gift. I still enjoy cars, but the interest comes and goes -- less so my interest in this ministry.

One other thing comes to mind regarding "inspiration" that I'd like to share here. It came to me via the book, The Meaning of Everything, by Simon Winchester. This book tells the history behind the exhaustive Oxford English Dictionary. The book's title is a picture of what the makers of the OED aspired to collect. Read by the author, it is by far the most enjoyable nonfiction audiobook that I've heard -- and I've heard many as a veteran long-distance commuter. (Note: More often than not, authors don't do nearly as well as actors when creating an audiobook. Winchester is a wonderful exception.)

Enthusiasm for a great project involving a lot of hard work is what I get from this book. My small effort can not compare with the incredible amount of work that went into the OED. However, sharing in the development of intellectual enterprise has allowed me to enjoy the book more than I would have otherwise.
