What am I?
Watch the video and listen to the instructions
Note to parents:
As you start this activity the children are likely to give you quite simple ideas and maybe incomplete sentences. For example on the first page if you ask "what is happening at the beginning?" your child may say "he's sleeping. Encourage them to say "Tom is sleeping" or "Tom was asleep" etc. We want the children to tell the story using full sentences. It's fine to model this for them to get the story going. Reading back what your child has dictated is a really good way to get the story flowing.
You don't need a sentence for every picture. You may end up summarising a few pictures with just one sentence. You may also like to choose one scene to describe more fully with some descriptive language. As this is a pretty new activity giving a few clues is ok but please insist that your child does their best to contribute their own ideas to the story.

Only Lucy sent me an answer to this question. Well done Lucy! Lucy suggested that the squirrel sniffed out the nuts and remembered where they were.
According to the team at BBC Wildlife Magazine, squirrels use a combination of clues to find their nuts again later. A particular place will have been chosen – under a big oak, for example – and remembered. Several squirrels may also use the same patch, which increases the probability that they will find stored nuts simply by chance.
When a squirrel returns weeks later, it peers at the ground, looking for disturbed soil and sniffing to detect a nutty smell. This multi-sense inspection focuses digging on the spots most likely to yield a nut. Any that are missed develop into new trees, benefiting future generations. Squirrels can even sniff out stored nuts under a layer of snow.
Fun facts about hibernation
Hibernation occurs when an animal becomes inactive, or "sleeps," during the short, cold days of winter.
Hibernating and dormant mammals include bears, squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, skunks, opossums, dormice, and bats.
Frogs, toads, turtles, lizards, snakes, snail, fish, shrimp, and even some insects hibernate or are dormant during the winter.
To prepare for hibernation, many animals eat to gain weight in the summer and fall. The extra fat keeps them alive during the winter.
A black bear can gain up to 30 pounds a week during its pre-hibernation eating binge.
During the fall, hibernating animals prepare nests for their winter sleep. Some store extra food in their nests.
Some hibernating animals wake for short periods during hibernation to eat and relieve themselves. Others sleep through the entire winter.
During hibernation, the heart rate for many animals slows to less than 10 beats per minute. Breathing also slows.
A hibernating animal has internal controls that prevent its body temperature from falling too low. The animal will wake up if its temperature is too near the freezing point.
Some female bears have babies during hibernation.
Note: This week there are some differences in the craft activities for each Prep class due to some things being organised before being notified about remote learning.
Cut the three circles in your activity pack. Remember to turn your paper and slide the scissors forward as you cut. No snipping or your circles won't be nice and round.
Paste the largest circle in the middle at the bottom of you blue page. The paste the middle sized circle on top, overlapping slightly. Then add the smallext circle the same way.
Draw eyes and a mouth and a carrot nose. Draw arms that look like sticks. Add a hat and a scarf. They do not have to look like the sample. You can draw any sort of hat you like.
Add some snowflakes.
Take all the pieces out of your pack.
Paste the blue paper onto the white background.
Using a good amount of glue, paste the white felt onto the blue page.
Using the small square of felt, cut out a hat or bow.
Go on a hunt in your backyard for some twig arms.
Now create your snowman gluing on his head, eyes, nose, buttons, scarf, twig arms and hat or bow. PVA glue is best.
Lastly add some sparkly snowflakes.
Colour the people.
Ask a grown up to cut them out for you.
Fold the feet. Glue them onto the paddle pop sticks to create the skis.
The activities below are for both Prep classes to complete.
After the pictures are coloured, carefully cut out the boxes and paste them in the right order to make a story on your piece of cardboard provided.
Colour the things that are the same in each box the same. It is easiest if you start with one thing and colour all of that thing first. I did all the jackets first.
Then all the pants
I kept going like that until my pictures were all coloured.
Then cut your pictures and paste them on the strip of cardboard in the right order to tell the story.
⛄️Print out a copy of the Snowman drawing page and the special die. If you don't have a printer you can draw the snowman's body (three parts) on a piece of paper and use a die from a board game you have at home.
Find someone to 'race'! Have fun. 😀
You might like to email your teacher a photo of your finished Snowman.
Below: Mrs Ishak and Lara have a game of The Snowman Race.
I wonder who wins the race?
An extra activity for those of you who would like to practice your tracing/writing skills. Don't forget to hold your pencil correctly and sit up straight with your feet under the desk or table.
A bit of fun starring Olaf!
Do you know what the opposite of Winter is? Yes, Summer.
What do you think would happen to Olaf in Summer?
