Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy Winter Newsletter 2025
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school, we thrive on cultural diversity and a strong belief that others, with their differences, can also be right. We also celebrate internationalism where our learning is interconnected with a global perspective, enabling our young people to think critically and beyond the boundaries of Dartford.
We kicked off the academic year by celebrating communication and diversity through the European Day of Languages. Students explored the rich linguistic tapestry of Europe and the world through taster lessons, quizzes, and breakfast food, helping us all appreciate different perspectives. This event also reinforced the idea that language shapes culture, essential for our community as IB communicators.
Our academy celebrated Diwali and invited our friends from Dartford’s Gurdwara to perform cultural music in an atmospheric winter garden display. Our community reflected upon the value of community spirit, and students learned about the festival's significance with the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
In November, our community paused for a meaningful observance of Remembrance Day which included poignant services in our winter gardens. Students reflected on conflicts past and present, with focus on the importance of peace, empathy, and mutual understanding, all key attributes of being Caring and Open-minded. We made a particular point of reflecting upon all loss in global conflict.
Amidst the cultural enrichment, I want to give credit to our students for keeping their daily standards so high. These habits underpin everything we do! It is a basic demonstration of respect to be on time, every time, presenting themselves smartly and upholding Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience at all times.
To conclude a successful two modules, we were delighted to welcome our International Baccalaureate colleagues to our academy for our five year IB MYP and CP programme status. The visiting team was incredibly impressed with our students, staff, and the strong culture of international-mindedness they observed across the academy. We anticipate receiving the official final report early in the New Year and look forward to sharing the confirmed outcomes with you then. This positive visit affirms the quality and dedication of our entire academy community!
We want to thank you for your continued support and wish you a festive and restful winter break.
