Year 7:
Year 7 are currently studying the topic of: Building Bricks
Key Concept: Communication
Global Context: Identities and relationships
Statement of inquiry: Artists can use communication with expression to be effective and support identities and relationships
This term, our Year 7 musicians have been exploring “Building Bricks” in music—small musical ideas that can be combined to create bigger, more exciting patterns. One of the most creative ways we’ve done this is through body percussion.
Students learned how everyday movements—like clapping, clicking, patting, and stomping—can become powerful musical tools. By layering simple rhythmic “bricks” together, they created their own short compositions, focusing on timing, teamwork, and listening skills. Many students were surprised by how expressive and rhythmic the human body can be!
We also experimented with call-and-response, rhythmic patterns, and group performances, building confidence and a strong sense of ensemble. Body percussion helped everyone understand rhythm more deeply while having fun and staying active.
As we move into the next unit after January , students will take the rhythmic building blocks they’ve mastered and apply them to new musical challenges. Well done, Year 7—your creativity is truly in tune!
Year 8:
Year 8 are currently studying the topic of: Video Game Music
Key Concept: Identity
Global Context: Scientific and technical innovation
Statement Of Inquiry: The identity of a video game or character relies heavily on the effective composition of effective sounds
This term, our Year 8 students dove into the exciting world of video game music, discovering how soundtracks help shape the player’s experience. From exploring classic 8-bit tunes to analysing modern orchestral scores, students learned how music can build atmosphere, guide emotion, and bring virtual worlds to life.
In class, students examined how composers use leitmotifs, texture, tempo, and instrumentation to match different game settings—whether it’s a tense boss battle, a magical forest, or a peaceful home base. They also experimented with digital music tools to create their own short themes, focusing on how musical choices support storytelling and gameplay.
Through listening tasks, creative challenges, and hands-on composition, Year 8 has gained a deeper understanding of how music shapes the gaming experience. Their work shows impressive imagination and an emerging awareness of how sound and design work together.
Well done, Year 8—your musical worlds are ready to play!
Year 9:
Year 9 are currently the topic of: Film Music
Key Concept: Communication
Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression
Statement Of Inquiry: Sound for film enhances the communication of on screen visual ideas by the presentation of a soundtrack to the audience which is dependent upon the personal and cultural expression of both the film writer/ composer and viewer/listener.
This term, Year 9 students have been uncovering how film music brings stories to life, transforming scenes through sound. From iconic orchestral themes to subtle atmospheric underscoring, students explored how composers use melody, harmony, dynamics, and texture to shape mood, build tension, and deepen emotional impact.
In class, students analysed famous film moments to see how music guides the audience’s feelings—whether through a soaring heroic motif, a chilling suspense pattern, or a gentle theme that highlights character relationships. They also tried their hands at scoring their own short film clips, carefully choosing instruments and musical ideas to support the narrative.
The unit encouraged students to think like composers and directors, making deliberate artistic decisions that enhance visual storytelling. Their creativity and sensitivity to mood have been impressive.
