Catch up with the latest Literacy and Reading news
It has been a busy time in Literacy and Reading at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy and lots of work has taken place to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to develop their reading, writing and oracy skills.
In Module 1, all students from Years 7 to 10 took part in Sparx Reader testing in the Lecture Theatre to gauge the ranges of reading abilities we have with our students. From this initial testing, students who were identified as potentially requiring additional support took part in a test through NGRT. This round of testing enabled us to develop a range of interventions including phonics work, comprehension reading groups and fluency reading with Post-16 students as the reading buddies. In addition to these support sessions, students have also been give Read&Write training, so that they can access the additional support that this add-on brings.
Our first Post-16 Reading Buddy session
Students from years 7 to 10 continue to take part in reciprocal reading sessions each week, as part of our core literacy plan. This module students have been reading:
Year 7 - The Fib
Year 8 - The Cratchits at Christmas
Year 9 - An Arrest
Year 10 - Dracula
Students are also being given the opportunity to have their voices heard through a Google Form, where they can say exactly what they like and dislike about the texts we read. The form is available through the year group Google Classrooms. Those giving their opinions will receive literacy points for their efforts.
