Amongst Courtyards
While studying the house The layout of the house shows the growth and the arrangement of
spaces. Traditionally, houses begin with a verandah, an open area that serves as a transition
between the outside and the living space. The verandah provides a buffer zone, offering both
privacy and access to natural elements like light and air. Moving from the verandah into the
living area, the house shifts to more enclosed spaces designed for social interaction and
comfort. This arrangement often mirrors the increasing privacy and intimacy required in the
home. From the living room, the house often extends to functional spaces such as the kitchen or
the backyard. The kitchen, typically located towards the rear, serves as the heart of the home,
providing a link to the outdoors for activities like cooking or entertaining. This progression from
open to enclosed spaces demonstrates the house’s growth from a simple structure to a more
complex and functional living environment.
So with the same designing elements ,I arranged the units facing each other and in such a way
that the cluster of four to five units creates a great interaction space for the people within the
structure itself and the unit too. Verandahs getting stretched to every unit with some open and
semi open spaces also creates interaction.
The arrangement of the living spaces are away from the adjacent road to maintain the
peacefullness of the space. Also the healthcare unit designed for the the village with easy
accessibility near the road
