PROCESS WORK
I began observing various types and scales of verandas around the village where we did our type study, which became the starting point for my design process.
In my native place, which is in Kokan, the semi-open place is called as खळा, where people spend most of their time and chit-chat within themselves and also with the villagers passing by. Also, my grandfather spends most of his time there. He tells me that it does not feel closed here.
So, I started experimenting with the verandas and arranging them into different clusters.

DESIGN INTENT - खळा
This old age home is conceived as an interconnected series of verandas, each varying in scale and spatial arrangement to cater to different needs. Derived from the study of veranda typologies, the design fosters an indoor-outdoor connection, encouraging social interaction.
The verandas serve as transitional spaces, linking private and communal areas while ensuring natural ventilation and ample daylight. Each veranda is strategically placed to accommodate diverse activities—some offer intimate seating for quiet contemplation, while others provide larger gathering spaces for communal bonding. By embracing the cultural significance of verandas as spaces of comfort and socialization, the design creates an environment that is both familiar and functional for the elderly.
The composition of these clusters promotes movement and accessibility, ensuring a sense of belonging, security, and well-being for the residents. Whether it’s a morning yoga session, an afternoon of singing, or simply sharing a quiet conversation, these verandas encourage connection, laughter, and a sense of purpose.
The verandas open into lush courtyards, where sunlight filters through the trees, the play of roofs in the courtyard creating a small, intimate space. Here, residents can tend to their plants, watch the birds, or sit back and enjoy the fresh breeze. Every corner of this home is designed with warmth, comfort, and accessibility in mind, making movement easy and interactions natural.
