Design Processc
I started with studying the different types of verandas in the village, how they are places and their scales.
I traced out the plans of the houses with the verandas. I noticed that they have a common grid which they follow. 2.5m by 2.5m.
Further I segregated these verandas into 2 major types- 1. verandas shifting inside the building, creating a niche and 2. Verandas becoming the front facade of the building.
Looking at the plans I understood that the scales of these houses are way bigger than I need for designing units for the old age home. So, I traced out only the spaces attached to the verandas.
During the study I also noticed that the people in the houses use verandas a lot so I decided to follow the same grid and extend the veranda spaces on the traces of the plan. I made a pattern of my own for this and named it 50% verandas.
Now following this process, I had many different plans for the units. Next, I decided to pull these plans up into sections and designed various housing units. These designs included different types of verandas in them and many different elements for the old. I made models of these units.
Out of all the units I selected one which I could repeat multiple times to create an overall morphology. I choose the unit which shifts 2.5m behind. This shift helps create niches and allows many possibilities of placements in a cluster.
I made diagrams of the possibilities of clusters I can make with this unit. The most interesting one from them was the one which makes a courtyard space due to its placement.
Talking that forward I created a morphology by placing that cluster on site multiple times which gave me 2 scales of courtyards happening in between. The single units had verandas attached to them but after figuring out the morphology, there were veranda spaces also created at lots of places which also became the connecting factor between the clusters along with the courtyards. Also, the form of the clusters allowed different types of verandas fitting into the design.
