OLD AGE HOME
The form draws inspiration from the rural morphology of villages in Palghar, which are characterised by clusters of homes surrounded by natural landscapes. The main idea was having series of courtyards connected through a common verandah/corridor, making courtyard and backyard connected as well. Also having this same modules/units and arranging them in a certain way to achieve this idea.
CONCEPT DRAWINGS
Using spine and rotation of same units as base geometry .This helped creating two major courtyards and alot of backyards which could be communal as well as private spaces at times.
The use of vernacular design elements responds to Palghar’s hot and humid climate, ensuring thermal comfort through passive cooling techniques such as shaded courtyards and cross-ventilation.
PLAN
The design is centred around a series of interconnected courtyards and backyards, linked through a common verandah/corridor. This arrangement merges indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a sense of openness and fluidity.
The layout integrates backyards as communal spaces that encourage interaction while maintaining privacy. This design reflects these principles by incorporating shared courtyards that act as transitional spaces between private and communal zones.
The modular repetition of similar units or blocks ensures uniformity while allowing for spatial flexibility. This approach aligns with traditional courtyard house designs, which emphasise natural ventilation, light penetration, and social interaction.
Locally sourced or reclaimed wood could be used to reduce environmental impact further. The hinged timber sheets (fenestration) and wooden louvres enhance this openness by enabling adaptable enclosure and shading as well as provide flexibility in controlling light and airflow, and ensuring seamless transitions between spaces. This biophilic element gives a connection with nature while enhancing occupant well-being.
Porosity is a defining feature of the design, achieved through voids, open corridors, and fenestrations that allow light, air, and movement to flow freely, hence making the spaces feel alive and interactive.
