Observations From The Village
A typical house in Makunsar can be divided into 3 parts: a veranda in the front, central rooms and a backyard which isn’t always defined .
The verandas afford activities of leisure and social connections the backyards on the other hand make social connections but while conducting the household chores such as washing clothes utensils or sometimes drying the papads made together.
Verandas becoming eyes of the house on a street.
Design Intent
While the households have families living together our attention was to observe the living patterns of elderlies in the house and the spaces they occupy.
The design tries to translate a street in the village which normally is wrapped around by houses community areas and empty pockets of land on either sides.
It includes residential units which accommodate a total of 22old-aged residents. 3 pavilions an amphitheater and caretakers room. A library which opens up to village and conducts tuitions for children in the backyard. Some of these units start to grown taller accommodating a mezzanine which lets the visitor stay during their visits.
A common dinning area on front pulled back using a veranda becomes the eyes of the elderly on the street something the old-aged residents of the village were seen doing. A healthcare center fulfils medical needs of the residents. The nearest hospitals being in the next village the healthcare facility opens it self up to the public providing for their medical needs as a way of giving back to the community. The design uses a vertical grid which comes from 3 ratios of housing units: 4 meter wide 4.5 meter and 5 meters
Taking inspiration from the existing type of houses the village these residential units start to become smaller houses within the ashram. They have verandas in the front and backyards which aren't necessarily these consolidated plinths everywhere.
The backyard is away from the sight of the street-like pathway the unit's morphology has. The backyard becomes an own personal space where the residents get to bring along their objects from home which carry memories for them, as a response the walls start to develop niches pockets and alcoves which start holding them.
Since the walls of these units are shared the roof does all the necessary Lighting. It has openings and slits these bring the light in.
Recessions and corrosions in the verandas create a pathway which does not reveal everything at the same time. But also opens up these houses to the street.
