NRAV CHOUGULE
My design work focuses on eliminating the silence of space by emphasizing interaction in residential areas. I have worked with community spaces to encourage villagers to spend their time together, rather than just focusing on their individual tasks. In addition, I have introduced an orphanage within the residential area, which will create a meaningful space for the community. This will foster interaction, learning from seniors, and mutual care, making a significant impact on their lives. My design reflects a concept where old age is integrated with youth, breaking away from conventional boundaries. This integration is achieved through the design language of the orphanage. Common spaces play a major role in this design, as they provide a shared area where both the elderly and children can spend their day. These spaces are strategically connected to both the residential and orphanage areas.
In responding to the site, I first focused on understanding the dimensions of the land, its relationship with the surroundings, and how both the long and short sides of the plot would contribute to the design. I also considered the access for vehicles. One of the key surroundings was a temple that attracts visitors, so I played with the landscape design by digging out the land by 1 meter to integrate the temple’s visitor flow with the site.
From the beginning, I focused on the volumetric ratio of existing spaces in the village, which helped determine the optimal size and arrangement of the plan. It was crucial for me that every common space be accessible and utilized by different parts of the plot. The height of the building was an important consideration, as well as the climate, where I utilized a second roof to help cool the space. The direction of the building also played a significant role in spatial arrangement, particularly in relation to the landscape, and the corner of the plot was strategically utilized.
