The Sand Creek Craft Show is annually held the Saturday before Thanksgiving and costs $3 to get in, has free parking and is located at Sand Creek High School. 100% of the proceeds benefit Sand Creek students through funding staff mini-grants. This year the craft show had an attendance of 2,380 people which is seventeen more people than last year!! This year the show made an income of $11,900 in booth rentals. Booth rentals cost $50 per spot, but varies per space; some spaces cost more or less due to size and depending on where its located.
There were 12 silent auction baskets and three donated by vendor items. The auction brought in over $1000 for senior scholarships.
The Sand Creek Craft Show is run by Ms.Roseboom, Mrs.Root, Mrs.McMunn, Ms.Herriman , Mrs.Klemm, Mrs.Thomas, and PTO officers. Jessica Quist, Lisa Kay, Kassy Klemm, Chris Ondrovick, Jen Alock, and Maria Rosenboom run the kitchen while Linda Bragg made and brought the food.
This event includes holiday items, candles, soaps, paintings, jewelry, fabric goods, floral items, antiques, clothing, evergreen wreaths, doll clothes, stained glass, ceramics, woodcrafts, books, a bake sale, furniture, home decor, roasted nuts and more.
The craft show is set up by vendors and students looking for their community service hours on Friday afternoon. The event is held Saturday from 8 AM until 3 PM, and the take-down is Sunday night.
Vendors are chosen by a jury. The jury figures out if the vendors are a good fit and if they are, they fill a spot in the waitlist at the jury meeting. They also “Eat a lot of food,” Mrs.Root who is their head of marketing stated.
Not only is this event fun and helps fund our activities at school, you just happen to smell the freshly roasted almonds and pecans lingering through the halls for days thanks to alumni, maintenance supervisor and owner of Absolutely NUTZ, Eric Serin.
Mrs.Goodson reports that at she and Mrs.Mohr’s "made just about as much as last year. The books and DVDS are all donated." She also said that she ”enjoys seeing people she hasn't seen in a long time.”
Mrs.Gunter and her mother are both vendors at the show. They bring seasonal wooden signs, snowmen, christmas items, and ornaments. She works on her crafts during summer, on the weekend, at night, and during her downtime. She states, “ it’s a stress reliever” and that she spends roughly average of 2-3 hours a day working on her crafts. She also stated that they had “Best ever sales, well over what they've brought home in the past.” Mrs. Gunter has been doing the craft show for 28 years and her mom has done it since day one in 1980-- that's 43 years strong!
The band bake sale brought buckeyes, bread, muffins, all kinds of cookies, rice Krispy treats, brownies, popcorn, and puppy chow. Each baggie of 2-3 cookies is sold for $1. They also have larger items like bread or nice containers of a larger amount of an item that sell for $3-10 each. The band also tries to use the craft show as the final push to sell the rest of the discount cards for the year. These are cards you can use around the community for you guessed it …discounts. The cards cost only $10. “We sold 60 cards at the craft show and only have a few left,” stated Wendy Meckley. When asked how they do not have a bunch of the same baked goods, it was explained that “Mrs. Toma has forms she has kids fill out with suggested items and if they turn them in ahead of time, she can let people know that we need more of certain items, ”stated Wendy Meckley. How well were sales? They sold everything and made about $1,250. They don’t really have a monetary goal; they just want to get as many donated items as they can.
