At parent teacher conferences, teachers of Sand Creek Jr./Sr. High School meet with the parents of the students. Parents come in and talk about how their child is doing in school. Every parent receives the child´s marking period one grades.
Some kids do not like their parents going to the parent teacher conferences because they have to go with them. Parent teacher conferences can occur in the Jr. high gym or in the high school gym. This month they occurred on November 6th and November 7th in the high school gym.
I interviewed Emerson Walsh about how he feels in regards to conferences, and he doesn't like the parent teacher conferences because he don't like to hear bad things about himself. When pushed for details, he gave this example:¨ Say I ate something and forgot to throw it away.¨ The teachers would tell his parent and tell them, ¨oh yeah, he never throws anything away when he's done with it.¨
Parent teacher conferences can also be for the parents to talk to the teachers about their child's subjects and what they need to improve. Some parents don't have the time to go to the parent conferences because they have a job or they can't make it. So sometimes the assistant principal Mr. Dyson will call your parents and give a reminder or an update on your child's grades.
I went and interviewed Mrs.Scheu and her thoughts on parent teacher conferences. Her personal opinion on parent teacher conferences were and her response was ¨I value parent teacher conferences because it gives us a chance to talk to the students and the parents.¨ I continued to ask Mrs.Scheu the question of what her likes and dislikes were of parent teacher conferences, and her response to that question was ¨I like the opportunity to talk to students and their families, I like the cookies that we get which is fun, but I dislike the number of hours we spend at teacher conferences because it is a total of 6 hours.¨
In all, there are mixed feelings about conferences, but they remain a consistent part of the school calendar.
