Bonjour families!
Thank you to the volunteers that helped us with our walking tour of Airdrie! We are looking forward to our skating excursions, as well as meeting families next week during student-led conferences! We hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Please let us know via email if your child needs to borrow skates - we can provide them for students, if students have their own skates and helmets, please have them bring a skating bag with the following items: helmet & skates (extra snacks are also a good idea on these days).

Monday October 24th - 9:00am - 9:45am

Why do we lose control of our emotions video: Emotions video.
Literacy:
We will be continuing our grade 2 words this week! The sound of the week is: "eu". The words of the week are: feu, jeudi, veux, peux, jeux.
If you are not sure about pronunciations, Wordreference (english-french dictionary) has a listen button for the words: https://www.wordreference.com/
You can work on these words at home by: reading the words out loud with your child (have them translate to verify their comprehension), have them spell the words (practice daily in the agenda), or have them use the word in a French sentence. You can also have the student practice identifying each letter in french and the letter sounds (phonemes).
For more ideas on how to practice sight words at home, see the attached below:
We will continuing to review poems (through shared readings) in order to practice learning new vocabulary, rhyming, our accuracy when reading, comprehension and fluidity together! We are slowly working on introducing our Daily 5 centers which include: reading to self, word work, writing, speaking and listening to reading (once we have our technology running).
Numeracy: We are diving deeper into our study of increasing patterns. We will be moving from non-numerical increasing patterns (involving shape, colour, etc.) to increasing patterns with numbers (ex: 2, 4, 6, 8). This will set students up to learn about skip counting! We will also be examining and describing patterns in art and cultural designs as we make our own rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali.
Science: We will be continuing to wrap up our study of insects and small animals with a cross-curricular art project. Students will use their creativity to invent an imaginary bug which they will begin sculpting from clay. Students will need to ensure that the anatomy of their bug is accurate, as well as design an environment that meets all of their insect's basic needs. We are looking forward to seeing students' creations!
Social Studies: Students are working to learn to use maps to determine distance, use relative terms such as near/far, use cardinal locations, and use relative location such as using geological markers and landmarks to determine where people and places are! We will then take this learning, and be collaborating between all grade 2 classes to create a giant map of our community.
