Bonjour!
It was so great to meet our amazing students this week! We are looking forward to the year ahead with this great group of learners. We hope that the first full week back to school and routines has gone smoothly in your homes. Thank you supporting your child with the transition of back to school this week!
Volunteers
If you are planning to volunteer at our school this year, it's a great idea to look into getting a copy of your criminal record check, and complete the annual volunteer forms. Our first volunteer opportunity, the Terry Fox Run, will be taking place later this month. Details to be provided closer to the date of the run. We are always grateful for our volunteers.
Welcome Letter: Included in the letter is more information about our school routines, please read through it with your child carefully.
If you have not already please send in a few items to help our learning this year:
Small flashlight that can be kept at school, labeled (dark reading for Friday's).
An old sock or white board eraser (to erase white boards/desks).
A small pair of headphones labeled in a ZipLock bag.
We would also like that you send an extra change of clothes for students to keep in their school bags (socks, underwear, pants and shirt) incase your child needs it.
Please keep checking the zip pouch in your child's bag. Students have their agenda in this folder and it also may contain papers/forms to be taken home and signed. We will be using the Agenda for practicing our words of the week and keeping track of home reading. If students would like to practice the words of the week at home, the agenda would be a great place to show this to your child's teacher!
The agendas will be used for your child to track their home reading and to practice their words of the week. We can best be reached by email for communication.
Home reading: We will be setting up an online home reading program soon, through Je Lis. We will be providing the login information into the front of the agenda once the program is set up.
"Toonies for Terry" Fundraiser: you can bring donations now until September 23rd, your children are welcome to bring in "Toonies for Terry" (all loose change is welcome!).
We are kicking off our Airdrie Food Bank Food drive! The food drive is only if your family feels that they can provide some non- perishable food items to help families in need in our community. You can help us with our food drive this month, by sending in canned or boxed items.
This week in:
Literacy: We will be reviewing our French sounds, specifically the sound "o" this week, and continuing to review grade 1 vocabulary such as the alphabet in french, colours, numbers and school supplies. We will also use the sounds we look at this week to build words and make sentences in French.
Numeracy: Students will be learning some numeracy routines that we will be implementing throughout the year. We will be learning about the many ways we can represent numbers (focussing on 0-20 this week) including symbolically, with written words, using base-ten blocks, tally marks, and in an equation.
Art: Finishing our self-portrait of students to represent and celebrate what makes us unique! Look out for pictures of students' finished work on My Blueprint.
Études-Socials: Continue introduction to learning about Canada and our Province in which we live.
Phys. Ed. & Wellness: We have been discussing the ways we can identify and express our emotions in safe ways. Please see the bottom of the newsletter for a video we watched to discuss how to recognize when we are feeling overwhelmed and choose a strategy to help us work through our feelings. We have also discussed strategies that students can use to feel empowered to use to solve minor problems they may encounter with peers during recess time or free play. The graphic for these steps is also linked below.
