Bonjour les familles!
Students enjoyed our assembly with Canadian Author, Sigmund Brouwer today to launch our read-a-thon!
February 10 - NO SCHOOL - Divisional Professional Learning Day
Learning Conferences: February Learning Conferences will take place on February 15 & 16 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Families will be able to book a 10 minute time slot for student-led conference via conference manager. Conference manager will open on Friday, February 3rd at 4pm, and close Tuesday, February 14th at 11pm. The Learning Conferences will be student-led!
Read-a-Thon: We were excited to kick-off our read-a-thon fundraiser at yesterday's assembly! Read-a-thon will run from February 2 to March 2. Our theme this year is "Reading Transforms Us"! All students are encouraged to read daily- our goal is for each student to read 500 minutes over the 28 day period (which is less than 20 minutes a day)! Minutes in class count as well. Every day our grade 2 classes read for 15 minutes-- these minutes can be added to your child's reading log. Reading logs and additional information have been sent home with students (check their backpacks!). Pledges for minutes read translate into entries to win book prizes, class pizza parties, and one student winner will even become principal for the day! Any pledge amount over $25 is eligible to receive a taxable donation receipt if a name and address have been provided. Happy reading!
Learning Commons (Library)! Please send your students' library books back to school on their designated Learning Commons day.

Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 120 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #8 - around 120 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out: Grade 2 Sight Words
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: We have been working on our writing workshop. Our focus is on writing about small moments, while focusing on using subjects and verbs. We think of an idea, touch each page and retell our ideas (make a plan verbally), draw and label (subject/verb), then write!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: We will be continuing our study of addition and subtraction within 100. Students have reviewed addition strategies for addition within 20. We will be building fluency by practicing all of our strategies in games and then moving on to subtraction within 20.
If you would like to practice addition at home, here is the link to the strategies we have learned: mental math strategies. Here are some of the games that we have been using to practice our addition strategies. Have fun trying some of them out at home!
