Literacy:
The sound of the week is: "oi /oin "
The words of the week are: besoin, moin, bois, fois, soir, choix
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 120 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #8 - around 120 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out:
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: Students have been working on stories and we will be looking to publish them after the break!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: Students will continue to practice double digit addition. We have reviewed regrouping for double digit addition (example when 47+ 55 are added together the 7 and 5 are larger than 10 so we must carry a one to the tens place) by using base ten blocks to build a concrete understanding of what it looks like to regroup. Students will also explore other strategies, such as decomposing the numbers and adding them together for example: 40 + 50 + 12 (7+5), understanding that there is more than one way to get to the same answer. Students have been practicing these skills through centers, we are looking to wrap up double digit addition this week and start double digit subtraction after the break.
Social Studies: Students have selected an arctic animal to complete a research project about. Students are now presenting their findings to the class. We are hoping to finish the presentations before spring break! We look forward to sharing videos of students' presentations via My BluePrint.
