Bonjour les familles!
Students have been enjoying our swimming field trips and we look forward to two more outings next Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you very much to all of our wonderful volunteers who are accompanying us to the pool!
Swimming: Students will be going to Genesis place for swimming lessons on Tuesday March 28th and again on Thursday March 30th. Students will need to bring their bathing suit and a towel to dry off with, and we suggest packing this in a separate bag to make it easier for students to carry. Please ensure that students are dressed warmly as we will be walking to the pool and back (it can be very cold for the students after they've come out of the pool on the walk back). We strongly encourage packing an extra snack for students as they will be spending a lot of energy on the walk and swimming lessons.
Learning Commons (Library)! Please send your students' library books back to school on their designated Learning Commons day.
Tuesday- Mme Cornell
Thursday- Mme McCaffrey

Literacy:
The sound of the week is: "on/ om"
The words of the week are: non, long, cochon, pompier
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 120 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #8 - around 120 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out:
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: Students will begin the planning stage of a fictional text. We look forward to hearing their imaginative ideas!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: Students will continue double digit addition. We will be continuing to review place value, emphasizing what it means when numbers are in the tens spot vs. in the ones spot. We have begun to look at regrouping for double digit addition (example when 47+ 55 are added together the 7 and 5 are larger than 10 so we must carry a one to the tens place) by using base ten blocks to build a concrete understanding of what it looks like to regroup. Students will also explore other strategies, such as decomposing the numbers and adding them together for example: 40 + 50 + 12 (7+5), understanding that there is more than one way to get to the same answer.
Social Studies: Students have selected an arctic animal to complete a research project about. Students will now have wrapped up the research phase and will be organizing the information they gathered into a sentences which they will use to present to their classmates. Students will begin practising their presentations in French. This project encompasses many interdisciplinary outcomes and will take multiple weeks to complete. We look forward to sharing videos of students' presentations via My BluePrint.
