Bonjour les familles!
Maker Space: Mme Page is asking for students to bring in cereal/cracker boxes. They are the perfect thickness for students to be able to cut and build with. Our next makerspace block is on Monday January 16 (McCaffrey) or Tuesday January 17 (Cornell); please send in cereal boxes as soon as you can!

Literacy:
The sound of the week is: "b". The words of the week are: bien, bonjour, bonsoir, ballon, en bas
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 70 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #5 - around 70 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out: Grade 2 Sight Words
Literacy Routine: Students across all grade 2 FI classes have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: We have been working on our writing workshop. Our focus is on writing about small moments, while focusing on using subjects and verbs. We think of an idea, touch each page and retell our ideas (make a plan verbally), draw and label (subject/verb), then write!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: We will be continuing our study of addition and subtraction within 100. Students have reviewed addition strategies for addition within 20. We will now be covering more efficient addition strategies such as :
I can use and explain doubles (6+6)
I can use and explain doubles plus 1 (6+7 is also 6+6+1)
I can use and explain doubles minus 1 (6+7 is also 7+7-1)
I can use and explain doubles plus 2 (6+8 is also 6+6+2)
I can use and explain doubles minus 2 (6+8 is also 8+8-2)
I can make 10 in many ways (9+1,8+2, etc.)
I can think "one/two more than..."
I can think "one/two less then.."
I can use addition to work out subtraction facts and vice versa
These strategies help students build number sense and will be slowly introduced over the coming weeks to ensure students have the opportunity to practice each one.
Science: We are continuing on with learning about temperature: hot and cold, we will continue examining how changes in temperature affect us and what we wear. This week, students learned how to use and read thermometers to interpret temperature.
Social Studies: We have now wrapped up our study of Airdrie of the past. Students will be bringing home their tipi project- ask them to explain what they learned about the tipis and Blackfoot people! We will soon be "traveling" to Iqaluit to learn about the geography of an Inuit community.
