Bonjour les familles!
Our students did a wonderful job performing at their Christmas concerts yesterday. Thank you to everyone who supported students by helping them memorize their lines, organizing costumes, and supporting our fine arts program through ticket sales!
We hope that you enjoy a happy and restful winter break with your family! We are looking forward to welcoming students back to the classroom on Monday January 9th!
Winter break: December 23rd - January 6th (First day back is January 9th)

Literacy:
The sound of the week is: "p ". The words of the week are: pas, possible, proche, pense, personne.
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 70 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #5 - around 70 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out: Grade 2 Sight Words
Literacy Routine: Students across all grade 2 FI classes have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: We have been working on our writing workshop. Our focus is on writing about small moments, while focusing on using subjects and verbs. We think of an idea, touch each page and retell our ideas (make a plan verbally), draw and label (subject/verb), then write!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: We will be moving on to addition and subtraction within 100. Students will first review addition within 20. We will then also be looking at addition strategies such as visualizing 100 as a composition of groups of ten, and composing a sum in multiple ways (including with more than two addends)·
Science: We are continuing on with learning about temperature: hot and cold, we will continue examining how changes in temperature affect us and what we wear. As well, exploring how to use and read thermometers to interpret temperature.
Social Studies: We are going to wrap up our learning about how our community has grown and changed over the years in Airdrie. We have been learning about the blackfoot people here before us in Airdrie. Students have been learning about the natural resources the Blackfoot depended on such as the buffalo. Students have been learning about tipis and have been creating their own models to showcase their learning. Please lookout for these on myBlueprint!
January 9th - First day of classes after winter break
January 12th- Theme Thursday: Wear hallway colours (we are in the blue hall)
