Bonjour les familles!
Students enjoyed our "flight" to Iqaluit this past Thursday and are looking forward to learnign more about this Inuit community. A big thank you to our pilot and flight attendant volunteers for making this exciting learning event possible!
February 20 - 24 - No School for Students
February 14th - Pink Shirt day
Personal items: Thank you, families, for ensuring that student personal items (such as toys, stuffies, pokemon cards, etc.) remain at home and not sent to school. They can easily become a distraction to learning. They can also cause disputes at recess and throughout the day.
Phones: Students who have phones may have a specific reason for having them, but these should not be visible, turned on, or in use throughout the day until after dismissal.
If these items are brought to school, they will be collected in the morning and returned to students at the end of the day.
Thank you once again, families!
Learning Conferences: February Learning Conferences will take place on February 15 & 16 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Families will be able to book a 10 minute time slot for student-led conference via conference manager. Conference manager will open on Friday, February 3rd at 4pm, and close Tuesday, February 14th at 11pm. The Learning Conferences will be student-led, your child will be sharing their learning with you so far this year!
Valentines Day: if you want to have your students bring in valentines to distribute to the class. A great idea for efficiency when handing out cards is to leave the "to" space blank. Rather, just have your child sign their name in the "from" section. This will be a great help when it comes to organizing the passing out of the valentine's. There are 22 students in Mme McCaffrey's class, and 22 in Mme Cornell's. Thank you for your consideration!
Read-a-Thon: We were excited to kick-off our read-a-thon fundraiser last week! Read-a-thon will run from February 2 to March 2. Our theme this year is "Reading Transforms Us"! All students are encouraged to read daily- our goal is for each student to read 500 minutes over the 28 day period (which is less than 20 minutes a day)! Minutes in class count as well. Every day our grade 2 classes read for 15 minutes-- these minutes can be added to your child's reading log. Reading logs and additional information have been sent home with students (check their backpacks!). Pledges for minutes read translate into entries to win book prizes, class pizza parties, and one student winner will even become principal for the day! Any pledge amount over $25 is eligible to receive a taxable donation receipt if a name and address have been provided. Happy reading!
Learning Commons (Library)! Please send your students' library books back to school on their designated Learning Commons day.

The sound of the week is: "g" doux & "c" doux. The words of the week are: cent, cinquante, gentil, nage, rouge
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 120 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #8 - around 120 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out:
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: We have been working on our writing workshop. Our focus is on writing about small moments, while focusing on using subjects and verbs. We think of an idea, touch each page and retell our ideas (make a plan verbally), draw and label (subject/verb), then write!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: We will be continuing our study of addition and subtraction within 100. We will be moving on to focusing on subtractions strategies within 20. We will be building fluency by practicing all of our strategies in games for both addition and subtraction. Students will be learning how the addition strategies they have learned can be useful to help solve subtraction questions. Students will be applying these strategies to subtraction up to 18-9. Here are some of the Subtraction Strategies students will be working on.
If you would like to practice addition and subtraction at home, here is the link to the strategies we have learned: mental math strategies. Here are some of the games that we have been using to practice our addition strategies. Have fun trying some of them out at home!
Totality Game (ask your child to show you).
Bump! (English version) Pousse-toi! (French version) Pousse-toi! CHALLENGE
Dots to print (if your child wants to colour them to use for homemade bingo chips.)
Science: Students will begin to explore magnets and investigate how magnets interact with our environment.
Social Studies: We have now "landed" in Iqaluit. We will be exploring the community of Iqaluit located in Nunavut.
Art: We are combining our learning about the landscape of the artic with our art project this week. Students created Ted Harrison inspired pastel landscapes featuring one of the types of Inuksuit traditionally found in the arctic. We look forward to continuing to dive into cross-curricular art projects next week as well!
