Bonjour les familles!
Students will be going on our swimming field trip this upcoming Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you very much to all of our wonderful volunteers who are accompanying us to the pool!
NO SCHOOL March 20 - Professional Learning Day
Tuesday March 21- Rock Your Socks! Wear funky or mismatched socks in support of World Down Syndrome Day.
Swimming: Students will be making their first trip to Genesis place for swimming lessons on Tuesday March 21st and again on Thursday March 23. Students will need to bring their bathing suit and a towel to dry off with, and we suggest packing this in a separate bag to make it easier for students to carry. Please ensure that students are dressed warmly as we will be walking to the pool and back (it can be very cold for the students after they've come out of the pool on the walk back). We strongly encourage packing an extra snack for students as they will be spending a lot of energy on the walk and swimming lessons.
Learning Commons (Library)! Please send your students' library books back to school on their designated Learning Commons day.

Literacy:
The sounds of the week are: "ou" and "ch"
The words of the week are: cherche, chien, marche, ouvre, sous, pourquoi
Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/everyday words) with students since the beginning of the year, at this point in the year we are expecting students to know at least 120 sight words, aiming to know 250 by the end of the year (students are currently expected to know up until slide #8 - around 120 words). We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out:
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: Students will begin the planning stage of a fictional text. We look forward to hearing their imaginative ideas!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: Students will continue double digit addition. We will be continuing to review place value, emphasizing what it means when numbers are in the tens spot vs. in the ones spot. We have been exploring double digit addition without regrouping to familiarize students with adding the ones first, then the tens. We will be beginning to look at regrouping for double digit addition (example when 47+ 55 are added together the 7 and 5 are larger than 10 so we must carry a one to the tens place).
Science: Students will continue to wrap up their study of magnets by identifying examples of magnets in use in their environment and daily life. They will be creating a magnetic toy to conclude this unit.
Social Studies: Students have selected an arctic animal to complete a research project about. Students will continue to be conducting research, organizing the data they find, and presenting it using clear communication to their classmates. This project encompasses many interdisciplinary outcomes and will take multiple weeks to complete.
