Administrative Reminders:
ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
We ask all parents to please time their child's arrival at school as close to 8:00 as possible. This is when the first bell rings for student entry. Prior to this time, there is no supervision.
Also, a reminder that there is no supervision of school playgrounds and playfields after school. Children that wish to stay after school to play on school grounds must be actively supervised by an adult.
Thanks for helping to keep our kids' play safe!

Sight words: We have also been reviewing sight words (common words/high frequency words) with students since the beginning of the year, as we approach the end of the year, students are expected to know at least 250 sight words. We have sent home some rings with words to practice at home. For some ideas on how to practice, please see this resource: Parents Guide to Sight Words
Here is the sight word list to practice with your child at home if you would like to print and cut more out:
Literacy Routine: Students have been organized into literacy small groups that will continue to receive targeted instruction on their individual literacy goals through targeted small group instruction, and specific literacy centers. Targeted skills include phonological awareness skills, phonemic awareness instruction, listening to French, speaking French, writing, and reading instruction.
Writer's Workshop: Students have been working on stories and we will be looking to publish them after the break!
Home Literacy: Please visit this page for details about our Home Reading Challenge.
Numeracy: We will be exploring how duration is described and quantified by time. Students will be using comparative language to describe the time between or duration of significant events. They will also practice writing significant events as dates. We will be exploring the concept of winter counts used by first nations people to measure time in non-standard units. Students will make their own version of a winter count to symbolize their years at school.
Social Studies: Students will be diving deeper into the geography and daily life of Iqaluit as they select landmarks in Iqaluit to represent digitally. We look forward to beginning a collaborative MineCraft map of Iqaluit to illustrate our learning about the geography of this arctic community.
Science: Students will continue to study liquids. This week we looked at the transformations water undergoes when changing from solid, to liquid, to gas. We will continue to expand our scope to compare other liquids next.
Phys. Ed.: Students have been so excited to begin gymnastics. Students will continue to apply a variety of gross motor and locomotor skills on a variety of obstacle courses set up in the gym. See below for some snapshots from this week.

Community Clean Up Challenge
Students at A. E. Bowers participated in a Community Clean Up Challenge against Nose Creek Elementary to see who could fill the most garbage bags with litter, who could find the most valuable item, and who could find the most interesting item. this challenge was in honour of Earth Day but also ties directly into our study of the importance of keeping water clean in science!
