Bonjour families!
We hope you had a great week. Thank you for your participation in Orange Shirt Day! Here is a look at our upcoming week.
As we move into October, we would like to let families know that A.E. Bowers has traditionally celebrated Halloween with school wide parades and treats. To be inclusive and considerate of all families, we would ask that if your family does not celebrate Halloween, please send your child's teacher an email so that we can shift our activities toward a more fall centered theme. Thank you!
There is No School for students on Friday October 7th & Monday October 10th
Please check if you are able to login to myBlueprint: https://app.myblueprint.ca/
Our first field trip of the year- Volunteers Needed
As a part of our grade 2 social studies curriculum, students will be studying the geography, culture, and economy of a prairie community. We have chosen to study our own prairie community of Airdrie. We will be taking all the grade 2 students on a walking tour of downtown Airdrie on Friday, October 14th. This will be a full day event. If you are able to volunteers to join us for some fresh air and outdoor learning in our community, please let us know via email.
Learning Conferences
Student-led Learning Conference will take place October 19 and 20th. This year conferences will take place in person. You may choose to attend in-person on either October 19, or in-person on October 20th. Here is the link to reserve a time: AE Bowers School Conference Manager.
Literacy:
We are excited to be piloting the new French Immersion Language Arts and Literature curriculum as a grade 2 team this year!
The sound of the week is: "u".
The words of the week are: rue, plus, une, tu, rhume, utilise.
If you are not sure about pronunciations, Wordreference (english-french dictionary) has a listen button for the words: https://www.wordreference.com/
You can work on these words at home by: reading the words out loud with your child (have them translate to verify their comprehension), have them spell the words (practice daily in the agenda), or have them use the word in a French sentence. You can also have the student practice identifying each letter in french and the letter sounds (phonemes).
For more ideas on how to practice sight words at home, see the attached below:
We will continuing to review poems (through shared readings) in order to practice learning new vocabulary, rhyming, our accuracy when reading, comprehension and fluidity together! We are working towards beginning our Daily 5 centers in the next few weeks.
Numeracy: We will be continuing to learn about the various ways we can represent numbers (with a focus on numbers 20-70). We have learned about using symbolic form, tally marks, base ten blocks, and equations, as well as identifying when numbers are even and odd (pair/impair). This week will also be learning about patterns; students will be asked to show their understanding by creating, expanding, identifying the core, and the rule of non-numerical patterns with two attributes (such as colour and size). If you would like to practice patterns at home; or try these activities: Google Slides or Game.
Science: Our exploration of insects continues! We will finish up exploring what insects need to survive in their environments. We will be comparing insects and other small creatures such as arachnids. Students will be asked to look for similarities and differences. See the bottom of the newsletter for photos of our outdoor observation time this past week!
Social Studies: We are continuing with the study of our community here in Airdrie. This week we will be wrapping up our exploration of things that connect our community (such as landmarks, traditions, celebrations, etc.). We will also begin learning about different types of communities by taking a look at the differences between rural and urban communities and thinking about why people live where they do.
Art: We will be working with chalk pastels to create beautiful fall landscapes of our environment around us.
October:
October 7th - Professional Learning Day (NO SCHOOL)
October 10th - Thanksgiving Holiday (NO SCHOOL)
October 14th - Walking Tour of Airdrie Field Trip (Grade 2s)
October 19 & 20 - Learning Conferences

Thank you,
Mme Cornell & Mme McCaffrey
