Step 1- Learn about a 'Wiki'
Step 2- Search with a 'Wiki'
We want you to be aware of a great resource out there that not a lot of kids use. It's called "Simple Wikipedia" and is EXACTLY what it sounds like. There is usually too much information on any given Wikipedia entry, nobody ever reads all that stuff.
The first search that you will be doing for this activity will be through both Wikipedia AND Simple Wikipedia. I would recommend that you search for something that you already know something about: a hobby, musician, sports team, place you've been, a topic you did a project on,... Rocky Hill!
You will look up your topic under the regular Wikipedia and posting a blog entry about it, then look up THE SAME THING using 'Simple Wikipedia'.
-Was there a difference in the information presented?
-Was one better than another?
A Wiki is a neat way for a group of people to talk about, and present information. It is “A free encyclopedia that anyone can change” Take a look at this article to help you answer the question: “What is a ‘Wiki ?”
A 'wiki' is a great resource for a quick explanation about a topic that you know nothing about. It IS NOT a resource that you can use for finding FACTS, so don’t cite ‘Wikipedia’ for a school project of paper. You might end up writing a report about things that somebody made up! Boy, that would be an embarrassing waste of time.
