Abstract
This study aimed to identify successful methods of teaching to optimize student growth. Utilizing research-based pedagogy, a unit plan was developed and implemented with the intention of raising student test scores. Students received a pre-test that assessed their knowledge of The Odyssey by Homer. On average, students scored 30% on the pre-test. With this information, instruction was tailored to the students' needs. Additionally, pre-teaching was utilized to familiarize students with the material before they read the story as well as group and class discussion to solidify key concepts. Throughout this process, formative assessment data was collected, allowing for the provision of comprehensible input, and differentiated content. The post-test administered covered the same content as the pre-test. Students improved by 47%, resulting in an average score of 77%. Student growth was the key factor assessed in this study; confirming that the pre-teaching, formative assessment, and group discussion aided in improving comprehension.
