Abstract
Light Up the Classroom is a grant proposal to fund light tables and materials to classrooms within one early childhood center. These classrooms serve low to extremely low poverty-stricken families and funding is needed to gain access to equipment to teach math, science, and social-emotional skills to children of these families. Science and math are two of the top standards that are required for teaching in preschool. Light-boards provide an interactive way to count, look at materials with light, predict, observe, and draw conclusions. This project is designed to create a book of activities, teaching and training materials, and equipment for each classroom. When Light Up the Classroom becomes a reality for these classrooms, teachers will have time to reflect and analyze using assessments and anecdotal notes to keep track of what their children are learning using the light tables. Children’s scores in math and science will advance and the activities that can be created to discuss social-emotional issues will help children define their emotions and how to help others.
