Abstract
This media ethics case will evaluate the use of sexually explicit lyrics in songs. In August 2020, rapper Cardi B released a new song titled “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion. While there are a variety of ethical issues that can be addressed concerning the song, this case study will focus exclusively on the lyrics and the writing process. The song drew a lot of attention due to the nature of the lyrics which describe sexual acts and the pleasure one would feel from performing such actions. The use of these explicit lyrics will be evaluated using Bok’s Model, a three-step process used when making ethical decisions and judgements. Immanuel Kant’s philosophical Categorial Imperative principle, a principle used when making ethical decisions, will be used to support Bok’s Model. Kant’s principle focuses on the action itself rather than the person who is acting. A final analysis of the use of sexually explicit lyrics will answer the following questions:
Would the song "WAP" lose its impact/message without the sexually explicit lyrics?
How are the lyrics in "WAP" simply like other lyrics and messages found in other songs from Cardi B?
What differentiates sexual innuendos in music lyrics vs. sexually explicit descriptions in lyrics?
