Children spend their days "coming" and "going" from caregivers. When it's a "I need a cuddle," or "I can do it myself" moment, we can often recognize their cues and are able to support their needs for independence or closeness.
Transitions are different. They're a take-charge moment for caregivers as we provide direction. What can we do to help this go smoothly? Here are some questions to consider:
Does my child know the transition is coming?
Is my child's emotional cup filled?
Am I committing to leading this moment with firmness and kindness?
For more information, read the full blog post here.
For strategies and support with transitions and other parenting topics contact our Family School Enhancement Counsellors. For information on upcoming Circle of Security Parenting Groups (online) contact Ms. Masson
Noticing the world around and within us is a great place to start when it comes to creating a gratitude practice. Make it an "eye spy" game, wherever you are, look around with your child and try to name one thing for which you are thankful .
Gratitude is about recognizing both the everyday and special occasion "good" in our lives. At mealtime, pick up, drop off or bedtime, provide some of your own examples and ask your kids for some of their own too.
What are your evening gratitude practices? Some practices you might already be doing include: talking about your day, prayer, meditation, devotionals, gratitude journaling or talking about what you are looking forward to for the next day.
Does your family have a favourite mealtime prayer or grace? If you're looking for ideas, check out this slide deck for lots of easy rhyming prayers. Rehearsing the good things already present in our lives helps us to anticipate good things in our future too.
Sports and outdoor recreation are important for our physical and mental well-being and often lead to friendships and connections to community that last a lifetime. The following groups assist eligible families to access recreation throughout the year:

Kid Sport: http://www.kidsportcanada.ca
City of Red Deer Fee Assistance Program: Contact any City of Red Deer Recreation Facility
