When we focus on grounding ourselves in the moment, our thoughts can neither worry about the future nor ruminate on the past. It requires us to let go of our distressing thoughts and allows us to relax our bodies as we tune in to the world under our fingertips.
Watch the penguins and their friends take a fun mindfulness walk around the West Edmonton Mall! What do you think they are noticing with their senses? Smooth floors, scratchy grass... How might they be moving their bodies mindfully? Creeping, waddling...
Looking to expand your listening? Check out these sounds from around the world.
Try going down to the river by Mackenzie Trails, Three Mile Bend or Bower Ponds to find some rocks or notice the rocks you stub your toes on along the sidewalk or in parking lots. Notice their shape, their colour and how they feel in your hands. Leave them behind for someone else to find or put one in your pocket to touch whenever you want to take a moment and forget everything else.
The Cozy Chair sure understands how grounding can bring us joy as we take time to notice and enjoy the world around us. I also love to take a walk in the woodsy parts of my neighbourhood, Kerrywood and all along the Trans Canada Trail that goes right through Red Deer to enjoy being under the canopy of trees, sitting amongst their roots and watching how their branches both stretch up to the sky and reach down to brush the earth.
You can take a listening walk anywhere-even down your apartment hallway! Grab your kids, grab your parents, grab your pets and take a walk in silence and take the time to notice what you can see, and smell, and hear.
Try noticing the world around you like this stone. At different times, in different circumstances and with different people, places and things we will feel differently and notice things differently. Mindfulness is noticing what we are when we are.
