January 2021 Updates from Our Counselling Team
- One on One Support - January 4-8, 2021, during At Home Learning, our counsellors are available to meet virtually and make telephone calls with students and families.
- Small Groups - Our small group focussed sessions will continue when we arrive back to school after our At Home Learning week in January.
- Universal Classroom Lessons: In the month of December, our Counselling Team shared a virtual mindfulness lesson with staff on Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). Please check out the tab at the top of the page called 'Mindfulness Focus' and select 'Breathing/PMR' for more tools to use at home.

January Mindfulness Focus: Positive Affirmation
Positive affirmations help to increase positive self-talk for students. Purposeful instruction and practice is essential to allow students time to create these messages and reflect on the feelings associated with them. Teaching positive affirmations is important for all students as it helps them to learn the impact and power of their words in addition to feeling a sense of empowerment.

Sports and outdoor recreation are important for our physical and mental well-being and often lead to friendships and connections to community that last a lifetime. The following groups assist eligible families to access recreation throughout the year:

City of Red Deer Fee Assistance Program: Contact any City of Red Deer Recreation Facility
The YMCA will also offer a discount or sponsor a student for families who qualify.

Our Breakfast Program is funded by the Government of Alberta School Nutrition Program and community parish members to provide a hot breakfast every morning to hungry students who haven't had breakfast. Breakfast programs ensure that all students have reliable access to nutritious food in a safe and supportive environment, in order to positively impact health and learning.

Our PC School Nutrition Grant allows us to provide each classroom with a bin of shelf-stable snacks to ensure students experiencing poverty have access to a mid-morning snack. President Choices believe access to good food and food education provides the foundation, so children can learn and grow, improving their well-being, making a positive contribution to the world around them – now, and in the future.
