Edison is excited to share that Hawa Ali did a wonderful job on today’s broadcast of Connections with Evan Dawson on WXXI, Rochester’s PBS/NPR affiliate.
Hawa participated in a rich and intriguing conversation centered on The Atlantic article “What Kids Told Us About How to Get Them Off Their Phones.” She offered thoughtful insights in dialogue with Evan Dawson and Dr. Michael Scharf of the University of Rochester Medical Center. Her contributions stood out and reflected the poise and talent she brings to our school community.
This was not only a fantastic opportunity for Hawa to shine, but also an important moment for Edison. Having one of our CTE students featured in such a respected public forum highlights the depth of talent and leadership among our students, while also strengthening the relationship we are building with WXXI for future collaborations.
Please join me in congratulating Hawa for representing Edison with such skill, confidence, and authenticity.

Edison’s Manufacturing Pathway students are gearing up for the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program. This exciting opportunity allows students to connect with local manufacturers through interviews that can lead to paid and unpaid apprenticeship placements.
To prepare, our 11th and 12th graders from the Automotive Technology, Machine Shop, Engineering & Optics, and Welding programs have been practicing professional interview techniques, creating interview sheets with “hot topics,” and highlighting the skills they bring to the workplace.
Through this preparation, students are not only building confidence but also strengthening the communication and career readiness skills that will help them succeed in the apprenticeship process and beyond.

Meet Wayne Ealouis. As an Edison Tech senior from our Automotive Technology Program taught by Mr. Bob Newell, he joined RochesterWorks "Roc Your Job" after-school employment initiative and started working at Valley Cadillac last year. After graduation, he earned a full-time role as an Automotive Technician.
"Roc Your Job" is now accepting students for this school year and RochesterWorks is also seeking additional employer partners to join the initiative and provide work opportunities for participants.
Employers and interested students are encouraged to learn more and apply at rocyourjob.com.
RochesterWorks Executive Director Dave Seeley joined County Executive Bello, Assemblymember Demond Meeks, Bob Johnson Valley Cadillac General Manager Daniel Moreno, and ROC Your Job participant Wayne Ealouis today at Bob Johnson Valley Cadillac to announce the launch of our 2025-2026 ROC Your Job After School Youth Employment Program.
Wayne, a RYJ participant, is now a full-time Cadillac technician and a strong example of how this initiative connects young people to long-term career opportunities.
We’re thankful for Governor Kathy Hochul & our state delegation for again providing vital funding for this program and employers and participants like Bob Johnson Valley Cadillac and Wayne for their continued partnership and commitment to supporting youth employment across Monroe County.
September 2025 NYSAA Program
Our NYSAA students are making a real impact in the Rochester community through their outstanding efforts to keep our city greener and cleaner. From participating in community clean-up projects to supporting local sustainability initiatives, these students are building skills, giving back, and showing pride in their work. We are proud of their commitment to making a difference for both our school and our community.

Architecture and masonry students are building on their employability workshop by applying their skills to real-world scenarios. Through collaborative activities, they are practicing communication, teamwork, and problem-solving while showcasing technical abilities such as design, planning, and construction techniques. This hands-on experience not only reinforces their craft but also strengthens their confidence in presenting ideas, working with clients, and preparing for future career opportunities.
September 2025
Our Construction, Architecture, and Design students have kicked off their Garden Bed Project with client meetings where they take on roles as project managers, interviewers, and designers. These meetings help students gather real-world details from community partners so they can design and build garden beds that meet actual needs.
Their first client meeting was with The People’s Pantry on Avenue D, a vital Rochester organization that provides food, baby supplies, and personal care items to families in need. Students learned how thoughtful design can support organizations working to fight hunger and promote dignity in the community.
This project goes beyond technical construction skills. Students are also practicing professional communication, teamwork, active listening, note-taking, and problem-solving — the same soft skills valued by employers. Guided by their teachers, they are writing professional emails, preparing interview questions, and developing formal design proposals.
We are proud of their strong start and grateful for the opportunity to partner with organizations like The People’s Pantry. As the project moves forward, our students will continue applying technical, literacy, and workplace readiness skills to create meaningful impact in the Rochester community.

Edison’s Machine Shop program, serving students in grades 10–12, has kicked off the year with precision and excitement! From safety and first aid to shop norms and measurement, our students are building a strong foundation for success.
Intro to Machine Shop (10th Grade): Students refreshed their skills on the milling machine by creating their first project of the year — a phone stand keychain. They also dove into lessons on the milling machine, ruler measurement, and breaking down .001”.
Level 1 Machining (11th Grade): Students picked up where they left off last year, designing and machining their own aluminum ink pens. They’ve also been studying lathe theory and procedures, and created informative posters to introduce Level 1 students to the lathe.
Level 2 Machining (12th Grade): Seniors have been sharpening their skills in precision measurement, blueprint reading, and machining procedures as they prepare for paid co-op positions with our outstanding business partners.
Our Machine Shop students are off to a strong start, combining technical skills with real-world applications as they continue to grow as future machinists and innovators.

Edison’s Masonry students are starting the year with energy and focus — refreshing their existing skills while learning new techniques that will prepare them for future careers in the trades. From laying bricks and blocks to understanding construction safety and precision, students are gaining both the hands-on experience and the problem-solving skills that the industry demands.
With every project, they are literally building their future one brick at a time, laying the foundation for success in construction and beyond.
