Poem in Your Pocket Day

Each year, at the end of National Poetry Month, people around the world celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day. The idea is simple: choose a poem to carry with you throughout the day, and share it with whomever you happen to see .

This year, Poem in your Pocket Day will take place on Thursday, April 27.  We hope you will celebrate this day with a poem to share. Parents and other family members, please join us! Just follow the easy steps below.

1. Read

You may have some poetry books at home or in your classroom that you can us, or check a poetry book out of the library. You may also look at some of the many places online where you can read poetry. And don't forget the poems from our Poets to Know page.

Look for the links to the Poetry Foundation or Poets.org to read some poems by each of our featured poets.

Read a bunch of different poems to get ideas for which to choose. Some people even decide to use a poem they have written, so that is an option too!

2. Select

Chose one of your favorite poems to share as your pocket poem. Keep in mind that you may read the poem quite a few times, so it should be one you are comfortable reading out loud (and maybe not too long!). Print or copy out your poem. You could even add a picture if you like.

3. Share

On Thursday, April 27, put your poem in your pocket. Read it to your family at home. Bring it to school to share with your class. Call a friend and read it to them. Facetime or Zoom with extended family and share it. There are many ways to show off your pocket poem!
