Women's History Month - A Global Perspective

Our focus continues to recognize and celebrate women's achievements-

past and present - national and international

National Women's History Month, most sources say, dates back to March 1857, when women from New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. In 1981, Congress designated the second week of March as National Women’s History Week and in 1987 expanded it to a month-long observance.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day that honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Since the first gathering in 1911, IWD has been supported by groups collectively across the world. The day also emphasizes the goal for accelerating women’s equality.

The story from the UK

There have been many discussions about women's history in the United States, but there are many parallels around the world.

Watch this video from across the pond that shares information and perspective on the meaning and activities of International Women's Day .

The global theme for International Women’s Day in 2021 is Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID World. It recognizes that COVID world-wide has impacted women and girls in many ways, amplifying the inequalities they face every day. It declares that diverse women’s voices and experiences are central to national and global recovery plans.

Here are a few examples of recently published series that speak to women's achievements now and then.

Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once said, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."

Do you agree with this statement? So make International Women's Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.
