November 23: Balloons Over Broadway

Watch:

In celebration of Thanksgiving this week, we are learning about the history of one special Thanksgiving tradition: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This parade is held every year in New York City and features lots of floats and giant balloons. But how did this parade get started? Who invented those giant balloons, and how do they get them to float down the streets of New York City? Find out the history of this parade in this week's story:

Make:

This week, try making your own parade puppet! Here are some things to think about to get you started:

  • Do you want to make an animal? Or a made-up creature? Something else?

  • What material do you want to use? Cardboard? A real balloon?

  • How can you make your puppet move, just like Tony did?

  • If you still need help getting started, ask a grown-up to help you visit Melissa Sweet's website. She has an activity kit for this book that has an activity kit that has puppets you can color in yourself. Find that here.

Just like Tony, you might have to experiment a little bit and try different things before you get it just right! You can send us a picture of your puppet parade and we might post it on the site. Email it to julie_seifert@psbma.org

Wonder:

How did Melissa Sweet make all those amazing illustrations? Just like Tony Sarg, she had to try a lot of different things before she got it right! Would you like to learn more about Melissa Sweets art experiments? With an adult, you can view this website from the University of Minnesota, which shows all the different drawing she did for the illustration of the elephant balloon. And that's just one page of the book! If you would like to learn more about Melissa's art process, you can find even more information about her process on that website, but make sure to have a grown up help you!

Bonus:

Ms. Seifert, who made this week's video, went to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in person in New York City in 2018. Here are some pictures of the parade. It was very cold! There was a Wimpy Kid Balloon. Will you watch the parade this year? Have you ever seen in it person?
