I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

These are the words of the oath of office that are recited when a newly elected American president is sworn into office every four years. The oath is usually administered by the chief justice of the Supreme Court. The president then delivers his inaugural address, introducing the themes of the new administration.

This ceremony is witnessed by those in attendance and millions more watching it on television. Tradition has expanded this ceremony beyond the taking of the oath to a full day that include parades and parties.
