Illustrators make very careful, thoughtful choices when creating illustrations. Look at the side by side images from Hike and Prairie Days in the slideshow.
What do you notice? What is similar about the story and images? What is different? Why do you think the illustrators made these choices?
Both books this week told a story or memory from the author's childhood. Now it is YOUR turn to share your story: write about and illustrate a memory of a favorite place, tradition, or activity.
How does your story begin and end? What is the setting? What details will you include in your illustrations to help the viewer feel transported into the setting? How will you orient your illustrations: portrait style, like Hike, or landscape style, like Prairie Days?
You can print out one of the sheets posted, or just use a blank piece of paper.
Pete Oswald drew pictures in the block letters of the title Hike. Pick something that you love to do and write the word in open letters then illustrate what that activity is inside the letters of your word.
Micha Archer has a unique style and technique. Watch this video to see how she used her technique to create illustrations for another book, Daniel Finds a Poem.
