Frederick Law Olmsted had many different jobs during his lifetime; journalist, head of the Sanitary Commission (later the Red Cross), and even gold mine manager. But he is best know for the beautiful parks he designed as America's first "landscape architect," including the "Emerald Necklace," a series of parks that winds through Boston. Olmstead loved nature, and believed his parks should preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible. He also wanted his parks to give all types of people a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
