Although Grace Lin started out as an illustrator, she quickly developed into an author as well when she started writing stories to accompany her pictures. Her first chapter book, The Year of the Dog, tells the story of Pacy (a girl very like Grace when she was young!), her family and friends, and her efforts to "find herself". Grace Lin also won a Newbery Honor for Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, a fantasy novel that incorporates many Chinese legends and myths. Her latest book, Mulan: Before the Sword tells the story of the Disney character before she became a legendary warrior.
Grace Lin has an amazing website with a list of her books, activities, videos, even a podcast!
For a huge selection of videos, including read-alouds and drawing lessons, visit Grace Lin's YouTube channel.
A great site where Grace interviews other authors and illustrators using questions submitted by kids.
What questions would you ask your favorite author or illustrator? If you want to, you can submit a question to the Kids Ask Authors website (ask your parents first!).
This week, we will learn about the cool features Britannica has to offer and Emily Roebling, the secret engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge.
First, watch this video read aloud of Secret Engineer: How Emily Roebling Built the Brooklyn Bridge, by Rachel Dougherty.

Watch this video first for tips on using the features, such as audio and translate, as well as tips for navigating between Britannica Elementary and Britannica Middl School.
Try building your own suspension bridge! Click on the video to the left to watch a PBS Zoom episode about building a suspension bridge at home, then try doing it yourself. Good luck! Want more? Check out this PBS Building Bridges site (an older website, but lots of good info).
