Who is Jim Thorpe?

James Francis Thorpe was born on May 28, 1888, near Prague, Indian Territory [now is known as Oklahoma], United States.

Thorpe was an American athlete and Olympic gold medalist. A member of the Sac and Fox nation in Oklahoma, Thorpe became the first native American to win a gold medal for the United States.

Life of Thorpe

Predominantly of American Indian (Sauk and Fox) descent, Thorpe attended Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kansas, and Carlisle (Pennsylvania) Indian Industrial School. He was a two-time All-American for the school's football team.

Thorpe was considered as one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports. He won Olympic gold medals in the 1912 penthathlon
