[Max Gros louis - Oné Onti]

Max Gros Louis Passed away on November 4th, 2020 but, he left behind an eternal legacy.

For a total of 33 years, Max Gros Louis was Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation between 1964 and 2008. During his reign, he was able to recover 148 hectares of indigenous lands to the Huron-Wendat nation as well as negociating the land boundaries for the Innu nation. Prior to his political career, he was involved in business. He made use of this background to create programs to help founding businesses and creating employment in his nation.

His work is now a proof of resilience in work and promotion of dialogue and collaborative work. His legacy, through his son Gaetan Gros Louis, has even crossed oceans as Gaetan Gros Louis is involved in humanitarian work in African countries, I had the chance to meet him at a couple times.

He was decorated with the Order of Canada and National Order of Quebec. His eloquence was an important vehicule to a change of ideology with regards to first nations in Canada. We still need to follow his legacy and keep building a strong relationship between governments and first nations. Just like he did in 1970s for the land rights recognition in the hydroelectric projects and when he confounded the National Indian Brotherhood which later became the Assembly of First nations.
