Program Year 1
Congratulations on being offered a slot as a URISE Trainee! Please review all tabs under Program Year 1 so you understand all the program elements and expectations in your first year.
Overall Program Journey Year 1
Program Year 1:
Spring: After you are admitted to the program, you will join in-person Monthly Program Meetings in April, May and June. These meetings will get you set up as a trainee, matched with an RLC, and ready for Summer Immersion Research Training
Summer: Your summer will be spend in Summer Induction & Immersion, culminating in a poster presentation at the annual Summer Research Symposium. You will also do 250 research hours in your first summer between July - September
Fall: Balancing research work with classes, engaging in monthly program meetings and activities about research professional development, career paths, research support, and attending your first scientific conference!! (Most students attend SACNAS or ABRCAMS in Fall.
Winter: Preparing to apply to Summer Research Experiences for Program Year 2 Summer - students are encouraged to attend another university program outside of OHSU. More information on Program Year 2 Summer Research Experiences soon!
Spring: Preparing to travel to your Program Year 2 SRE (Summer Research Experience), communicating with your RLC about travel plans, and planning a poster and presentation for the SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Forum) in September.
Compensation
URISE Trainees are paid via a monthly stipend. For 2024-2025, the stipend amount is approximately $1,195.00 between July and May each year while an active Trainee in URISE. In July, Trainees receive two stipends. Details about the July stipends are listed below.

Confirming Banweb Information Google Form - due 5/15
CIMR FERPA & Work Products Release Form - due 6/15
Signed Stipend Form - due 6/15
eRA Commons Personal Profile Completed - due 6/15
eRA Commons Trainee Appointment Routed to PI - due 6/15
Second July Stipend
The following tasks are required to receive your second July stipend:
Signed Summer Trainee Agreement
Completing 7/11 and 7/13 Onboarding Sessions
Completion of OHSU OVV Onboarding

Research Hours and Working at OHSU
What counts toward the requirement of 250 Summer RLC hours and 100 hours in Academic Year?
All time spent on OHSU and/or VA onboading tasks
All time spent on all work assigned by your Research Mentor & RLC
Required Lab Meetings & Trainings
Literature reviews as approved by RLC
Work on Alternative Research Skills Curriculum assigned by Dr. Dixon (this is an option if you will not get to the 250 hour requirement)
