General Academic-Year program requirements
General Program Requirements
You must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credits) at PSU only in a biomedical major in order to be eligible for URISE and receive URISE financial support. You cannot be enrolled at another institution while receiving the remission and stipend. If you plan to co-enroll at another institution (including another partner institution), please let URISE know immediately. Also, if you anticipate changes to your enrollment that will result in less than full time enrollment, including withdrawing from classes, please let URISE know immediately.
You are responsible to understand and act in accordance of the requirements of the Scholar Agreement and all other URISE and CIMR policies and procedures.
You must be a full-time student in the Academic Year Terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring) and you must prioritize up to full-time work in your RLC each summer. *If you need to take summer courses, please email urise@pdx.edu to discuss your schedule and program RLC priorities.**
You must work with the program to balance your academics and program elements such as Monthly Program Meetings, RLC Research Work, and Program Events. You must also plan to carry reasonable course loads that support your academics and research.
**Summer is different!** Please see your Program Year Pages for a Description of Summer Program Elements.
Enrollment
Requirement
Trainees must be registered full-time (12+ credits) at PSU
Maintain full-time enrollment (12+ credits) during the academic year (Fall/Winter/Spring)
Notes
There is NO registration requirement for Summer
Fall: Per NIH regulations, Trainees are required to be registered full time (12+ credits) for Fall. If you need assistance please email (cquatela@pdx.edu) or meet with Carlos Quatela.
Trainees who drop below full time are no longer eligible for URISE.
GPA
Requirement
Earn term GPA of 3.0 or above
Maintain a cumulative and overall GPA of 3.0 or above
Notes
If you are taking summer courses you are required to Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0+
A GPA of 3.0+ is a primary component of a competitive graduate school application
Major
Requirement
Declare and maintain an URISE-related major in social, behavioral, or biomedical, health fields. List of majors here.
Notes
A biomedical major is required to be eligible for URISE. Should a Trainee change their major to a non-biomedical major, they will not be eligible to remain in the program.
Trainees without a biomedical major are dismissed by the program, unless a petition to the NIH is submitted and approved
If you are concerned that your major is not considered “biomedical” or are considering a major switch please meet with the URISE Advisor
research learning community (RLC)
Your placement in a URISE RLC is the centerpiece of your experience and training in URISE.
Details about your RLC placement, including hours requirements and rollover requests, are available on the RLC Information page.
monthly program meetings
Requirement
Attend and participate in Academic-Year Monthly Program Meetings from September - June.
If you have an unavoidable conflict, you must meet with Becky Miller, Program Manager, in the two weeks following the meeting.
If you fail to communicate your absence or attend a make-up meeting within 21 days of the program meeting, you may experience a stipend delay.

Career Mentoring
URISE Career Mentors are available to discuss a wide range of topics such as academic advising, academic progress toward degree, personal life considerations, career advising, academic skills, advising on graduate programs, campus connections, research skills, networking, financial concerns and financial aid packages for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Career mentors can also help you craft an individual development plan (IDP) to help you pursue your training goals.
monthly reporting forms
Submit the CIMR Monthly Reporting Form (MRF) on the 15th of each month (unless otherwise directed). **This process is undergoing a transition in July 2024. Stay tuned!
