Financial Aid

Cost of Attendance

The financial package offered by NIH to URISE Trainees provides substantial support. Financial support provided by NIH is intended to offset living expenses while you are on trainee appointment. Per the Department of Education, PSU is required to report summer stipends in the next aid year starting in Fall term as Estimated Financial Aid (EFA) if a Trainee is not enrolled in summer classes.

PSU may not provide more financial aid than your overall Cost of Attendance. Stipends disbursed in the summer, especially if Trainees do not take summer classes, can possibly meet your entire Cost of Attendance. This would mean you would not be eligible for other forms of financial support because URISE support has already met your entire Cost of Attendance.

One option to help with this situation is a Cost of Attendance Increase Form (COAINC), which is a request to have the Office of Financial Aid increase your estimated cost of attendance for costs resulting from special circumstances that were not included in your original financial aid calculation. This could include additional credits, differential tuition, higher rent, childcare, etc. that was not previously budgeted for in your Cost of Attendance. Raising your Cost of Attendance may be able to add room in your financial aid budget for non-URISE financial aid.

If URISE financial support is impacting other forms of financial support you are eligible to receive, you can submit a Cost of Attendance Increase Form (COAINC) following the instructions on Financial Aid's website no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of the term.

Cost of Attendance Increases are considered professional judgements by a school and be initiated by the student.
