Spring RLC Matching
The research component of your URISE experience begins with a match between you and a Research Learning Community (RLC). Your RLC is where you will work for the next two academic years, developing your research skills and experience. The RLC matching process is your first responsibility as a URISE Trainee. You will work closely with the RLC Matching Team to complete this process. URISE places all Trainees in non-clinical OHSU RLCs.
RLC Matching Team
Dr. Cynthia Morris (URISE Co-I)
Katy Lesowski (OHSU)
Becky Miller (URISE program Manager)
Dr. Shandee Dixon (RLC Coordinator)
Cassandra Ramires (Matching Coordinator)
About OHSU RLC Placements
There is an onboarding process with their OHSU Visitors and Volunteers Office - this includes a background check. If you have concerns about successfully passing a background check, please notify urise@pdx.edu right away.
URISE Trainees are expected to complete all program activities in person, as in-person engagement creates the best environment for growth and development as a researcher.
You will need to travel to OHSU for RLC work. Make sure you know the location of your RLC before your first day in the lab.
Current OHSU employees will have restricted entry into OHSU RLCs. Please contact Dr. Cynthia Morris if you have questions about the policy if you are an employee (morrisc@ohsu.edu).
URISE Trainees must abide by all OHSU COVID Policies.
Expectations
RLC Matching is the foundation of your URISE Trainee Placement. Check your institutional email multiple times a day during this process as RLC matching is a time-sensitive activity. Being responsive to emails from URISE and OHSU faculty will facilitate a smooth RLC placement.
Apart from your spring classes, RLC Matching should be your top priority. This includes:
Attending all mandatory URISE and RLC Matching sessions
Completing assigned tasks promptly
Proactively communicating with Becky Miller should any challenges arise that might affect your participation or task completion.

Summer Housing
URISE offers paid housing for summer programming to a limited number of Trainees who meet certain criteria. If approved for on-campus housing, paid housing would cover July 8th to September 29th*. URISE paid housing is tied to your participation in URISE Summer Programming and completion of transfer milestones (if applicable). To request paid summer housing you must complete the URISE Summer Housing Request Form.
*Tentative
URISE Summer Housing Eligibility
In order to be eligible for summer housing, URISE Trainees must demonstrate that:
Commuting to Portland/OHSU for Summer programming presents a hardship that would inhibit full participation in Summer Programming; AND
Housing circumstances are different during Summer and Fall (e.g., Trainees will be living in the PSU dorm starting Fall, will not have transportation until Fall, in the summer you are living in an area with unreliable internet connections but moving to a better service area for Fall, etc.)
This form is to request summer housing only. Trainees are responsible for arranging & paying for their own housing for the academic year through PSU’s Housing and Residence Life office https://www.pdx.edu/housing/contract.
Questions about URISE paid housing for Induction & Immersion should be sent to exitooperations@pdx.edu AND urise@pdx.edu.
Planning for Summer and Academic Year Housing
Carlos Quatela can assist you with any housing planning you have. Please meet with Carlos if any of the items below apply to you.
You are unsure of your Fall 2024 housing plans or just want someone to discuss it with; or
You want to learn more or have questions about academic year PSU housing options/process; or
You are curious about the off-campus housing options we are aware of; or
If you are ineligible for URISE paid summer housing (see the Housing Request Form for eligibility) to get information on housing options/tips.
Expectations
URISE Summer Programming is intended to be your first commitment in the summer. All other activities, classes, part-time work, etc. should be scheduled around URISE commitments. Your active participation is key to a rewarding summer. This means:
Being present in-person for all scheduled programming at the PSU campus. 🏫
Fulfilling the 250-hour research commitment with your RLC. ⏳
If you anticipate facing challenges attending sessions or completing tasks you MUST inform your Program Lead, Becky Miller, immediately.

One-Time Conflicts
Summer workshops and research hours are integral to your time with us. As such, Trainees must inform us of any conflicts (including needing to attend remotely). There are two types of conflicts - breakdown below
Examples of conflicts: class conflict with workshop times, other summer programs, work, family commitments, emergencies, vacations, etc.
Don’t forget after summer classes, Induction & Immersion should be the top priority for Trainees. You must inform your RLC of any time off or waived hours.
Ongoing, Unavoidable Conflicts
Action: Request a waiver on the hours that can’t be made up. This includes workshops and RLC hours.
If approved, you will not be required to complete the waived hours (although you can opt in to complete them if plans change and you want/can complete them).
