Artist Statement/Bio
I am a recently retired teacher, having taught foreign languages for 36 years, and Art the last 3 years. I came to art somewhat late in life. But, looking back, I realize creative endeavors have been part of my life since I was a teenager, designing/sewing my own clothes, cross-stitch, quilting, scrapbooking, you name it. I have worked in several different media, but I am most fascinated by Scratchboard. I am continually amazed at what can be created on an inked board with tools and inks to add color. I love doing animals in this medium, because you can make them as life-like as you want, and you can play with the values of light and dark to create a very dramatic piece.
I have been a member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists for 2 years and am currently serving on the board as Secretary. I have also been a member of PSNC for the past year.
Most recently, I won the Best in Show award at the Clayton Art Faire for "Lily White, Raven Black", and Honorable Mention at the Fine Arts League of Cary for "Irish Red Stag".
I try to infuse my work with a positive energy, attitude, or message, which I strongly believe comes through the work and impacts the viewer.
