Artist Statement/Bio
Jay DeChesere received a degree in architecture and practiced for 45 years before embarking on his real passion, art. Technology in the 60’s required development of skills in perspective, pen & ink, washes and pencil drawing to depict design concepts. This became invaluable in his current art pursuits, as he has never enjoyed the benefit of a formal art curriculum. His feels that he is “painting forward while learning backwards” through watercolors and pastels. Since seriously beginning to paint in 2014 he has been juried into over 24 shows, has received 19 awards and has had work selected for two major art publications. He has been a part of three two-person shows, one solo show, and a member of a coop gallery. Works are currently displayed in local venues and in state shows. He has also achieved signature membership in the Pastel Society of NC and the NC Watercolor Society.
Jay’s process for artwork focuses on painting subjects that convey a message or mood in a manner that emphasizes composition, colors, focal points, and other concepts that hopefully make a good painting.
