Cultural Appropriation

Credits Where It's Due

Cultural appropriation is defined by Merriam Webster as "the adoption, usually without acknowledgment, of cultural identity markers from subcultures or minority communities into mainstream culture by people with relatively privileged status."

While the phrase is rather new, being established in anthropological spaces in the 1980s, the sentiment has been in the minds of many for millennia.

As mentioned previously, modern anthropologists have put forth great effort in recent times to contribute to cultures and highlight systemic issues as well as notable people within the communities they document. When participating and learning about cultures that are different from ours, it is essential to follow this same process while acknowledging our personal privileges.
