About Sieta

Sieta (pronounced Seeta) is originally South Sudanese, born and raised in the Netherlands and currently residing in the UK. She is a married mother of one, and she is currently pursuing her second Masters (Masters of Public Health) at The University of Manchester. She is passionate about feminist issues, healthcare (especially from a racial, sex and gendered perspective), and peacebuilding. She hopes to work in Public Health in the near future, focusing on healthcare inequalities and sexual and reproductive health.

Campaigns and Activities

Over the years I have been part of various campaigns related to feminist issues, peacebuilding and health. I have written for and contributed to several UK-based and international media platforms on issues around South Sudan. I have sat on panel discussions at various universities, including Humboldt University, Germany, SOAS University of London and University of Oxford, discussing issues around South Sudan including, peacebuilding and feminist issues. I have also participated in Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) East Africa (Cohort 27), Model African Union at the African Union (2019), and the United Nations Graduate Study Programme (61st year 2023).

I was recently part of a secretariat that organised a major 3-days’ conference on peace in Juba, South Sudan, in 2021. From that conference we created a green book of resolutions for peace at the grassroots in cattle keeping communities in Warrap State. The book has been used since by various South Sudanese governors to implement peace in their states.

Currently, I continue to participate in activism activities in my native South Sudan, despite currently residing in the UK. I am part of Juba-based Citizen’s Call for Emergency Evacuation and Reception of South Sudanese Trapped in the Sudan’s War (Citizen’s Call ERRI). Citizen’s Call ERRI is an evacuation initiative that has evacuated over 5000 South Sudanese from Sudan since Sudan’s war began in April 2023. I have been responsible for outreach, fundraising and drawing media attention, which I have successfully managed, enabling our feature in the BBC and New Humanitarian, among many other international media houses. The work for Citizen’s Call ERRI remains ongoing, and I am still actively participating in fundraising and drawing attention to the evacuation efforts.

Besides the above, of course I am currently a Community Leader with ONE. I am also a CL Newsletter Lead, working with a team of other great CLs to produce this great newsletter.

Why do you want to volunteer with ONE?

I am volunteering with ONE because I am passionate about issues that ONE focuses on. These include health, poverty and women’s’ rights. I have used data and information from ONE, particularly on girls’ education in South Sudan in some of my campaigns. I believe working as a Community Leader with ONE will allow me to contribute to making a positive change within my local community.

Hobbies and Interests

I’m an avid writer with my own website where I cover many issues and share personal thoughts and updates. I also really love activism; it’s something I will continue to do. Lastly, I love cooking and trying new recipes, and travelling; I try to travel to new places at least once a year.
